John August Swanson's serigraph of Flight into Egypt tells the story the Holy Family's escape to Egypt to protect their infant son as told in Mt 2:13-15. Following his second dream in which the Archangel Gabriel warned of the Massacre of the Innocents, Joseph, "got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son." John Swanson's serigraph is a beautiful portrayal of this Advent journey. With Bethlehem in the distance, angels with lamps guide the Holy Family to safety.
